While I have been interested and peripharally involved in motorsport for many years, I have never actually spectated at a rally before.

I am thinking of trying my hand at photographing the Electrohead rally this Saturday (which is to be heald around Bronkhorstspruit).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Safety comes first…rally cars will 90% of the time spin off or run wide to the outside so don’t position yourself in harms way. Use common sense!! Plan your position with a safe and easy escape route should you require it. Secondly its a dusty affair with flying pebbles and sand everywhere, protect yourself and your equipment. Now is a good time to fit a protective filter, using a PL filter does double duty. Faster ss is required than for track racing, because the cars vibrate and hop and down as well, no smooth tar running here….you cannot pan for a car bouncing up and down. Have fun.

I can confirm the safety aspect. I stood in a track about 30m down the road after the cars were supposed to make a 90 degree turn, one driver did not see the arrow and proceeded down the track at full speed and missed me by a meter or two. And through a lens you do not see it coming so easy.

    Thanks Simon and Fanie.

If the program says the first car is expected at a certain time, is that the start time or the finish time for that stage?

It implies the start of the stage. I will be there on Friday afternoon stages, if anyone cares to join…
