What side is the correct side for the gimbal to be on? Left or right. What works best for you and why.

For me if it is on the left hand side I have control of the gimbal but awkward control of the zoom lens and focus.

If it is on the right, I have total control of the zoom and focus but no control of the gimbal.

      What lens are you using?
I keep mine on the left side as I shoot with a prime and don’t manually focus.

Terry, In a bird hide I use a camera steady with my Sigma 150-600 contemporary.
Landscape I use the Canon 16-35mm f/4 on a manfrotto tripod
Macro I use the Canon 100mm f/2.8 IS

So mostly zooming, manual focusing when shooting macro.

      Gimbal is the Benro GH2

I put mine on the left, but I only use it for long primes, and I find it doesn’t obstruct the focus of my particular lenses.

For other tripod use, I use an old three-axis head.

For me always left. Cannot operate the camera properly if lens mounted on the right.
