Hi some advise please. I am an amateur and would like to get more into wildlife photography. I have recently upgraded to a Canon 7D mk2 from a 40D and I have the old push and pull Canon 100-400mm lens. I am looking for more reach like the sigma, but how does it compare to the new Canon lens? Also any thoughts on using the old Canon with my new 7D Mk2? Budget wise the Sigma way cheaper….not sure if I can justify the price difference! Any advice or comments welcome please

The 7d mk ii paired with a 100-400 mkii is a excellent combo. The 100-400 mk ii takes the 1.4X well for more reach and the IQ is much better than the Sigma C even with the ext.

The Sigma C is not the right lens for comparison – The Sigma 150-600 Sport is the more ideal comparison. The Sport is way better than the C in all repsects – sharpness, AF speed, build quality, and a real opposition for the 100-400 Mk2, also more comparable in price. The 100-400 Mk2 is very good, much better than the Mk1 version, and handles a 1.4x TC very good indeed. If you want to save money, keep the 100-400 Mk1, or get similar results using the C and pay in around R6k after selling your old lens and getting a new C, gain 200mm and not much else. Or go proper and get a Mk2 or Sport and gain plenty in IQ and AF capability, but at more expense.

Your 100-400 Mk1 is a good lens, if you are satisfied with the result you’ve been getting, then why change. It will work well enough using the 7D2. If you feel you need better, consider the Mk2 (also with 1.4x TC) or the Sigma 150-600 Sport. If you have lots of money, get the 120-300 f2.8 Sport ( and 2x TC) for the best of both worlds.

Thank you Simon, that is most helpful! Big decision….have always loved my Canon Mk1 and have been happy so maybe will wait until I can afford the Mk2 with the 1.4 x TC. Thanks again!

You are most welcome. Feel free to visit my website (see address in signature line) and read the reviews I did on the C, S and Mk2, including comparisons with their main competitions.

Canon is the best. My Opinion. Also Dustin Abbott reviewed it and he says the same thing
